The year started with a combined clubs visit in Whyalla for Vocational Month. A barbecue lunch was held followed by a visit to One-Steel.
Throughout the year we supported students from the local area to attend a variety of seminars and camps to help their learning and develop leadership skills. Tara Hogg attended Flinders University and Christopher Hedley attended Adelaide University as participants in the Siemens Science Program in January 2003. Tristan Clements attended the Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment at Stirling in April 2003. He then spoke at a local Rotary meeting giving members an insight into the value of the RYPEN weekends for young people. No applicants were received for the RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) or the National Youth Science Forum. We will continue to advertise and support these worthwhile programs.
A new venture this year was the Pride of Workmanship Awards. This presentation to local employees who take pride in their personal performance in the workplace has been tried and tested for a number of years in Port Lincoln. With the support of Jim Pallant the Vocational committee decided to go ahead and establish this award in Port Augusta. The first award night was held on Saturday 3 May at Spencer TAFE with Alexis Savaidis as our guest speaker. The students of the Pre-Apprentice Commercial Cookery Course catered for the meal and many favourable reports were given. Three awards were presented on the evening to Kylie Ann Brock, Carmel Boscence and Colin Chez Sparrow. The new committee will be working towards a bigger and better Pride of Workmanship Awards night.
I wish to thank my committee and other members of the Rotary Club of Port Augusta who have supported me in many ways and helped me to understand the protocols of an organisation such as this.
