Where does all the time go, it seems to me the last 12 months have passed so quickly, it was like sand sliding between your fingers on a beach, all gone in a moment. It is truly very hard to comprehend that a full year has passed by.
On reflection the year has been a very full and enjoyable one for myself, and I trust the club as a whole. If I may I would like to just mention some of the activities we enjoyed.
We supplied tour guides for touring bus companies around Port Augusta. The Club again participated twice during the year on cleaning up the Highway. Rotary Park was visited twice during the year, much planting and weeding was done by all. The Club travelled to Whyalla and visited One Steel with the Whyalla Club. Catered for the Port Augusta Race Committee in July. We attended the Mildura conference and all members had a great time. We catered for the Restorers Car Club at the Port Augusta Race Course. The Christmas Pageant was very successful, and catering on the night proved very fruitful for the club. The Australia Day Breakfast again was very successful, something like 600 breakfasts were served. A dinner night with Barbra Holbrow the instigator of Hope for the Children was held at the Standpipe Hotel. The District Governor's visit was very successful and the Club received a letter the next week thanking us for the terrific reception he and his wife received on their visit. The Club had the inaugural dinner for the Pride of Workmanship Awards, and what a great night this was. We purchased 1000 Emergency Booklets for distribution by the Ambulance Service to elderly persons.
You can see by the Directors Reports the activities the Club as a whole has been involved in. I will leave it to you to read these and see the bigger picture of all the club has accomplished during the year.
I thank all Directors and their committees for their dedication and support for the year, without them the year would not have been as successful as it was. Thanks to Merv for the many laughs during the fine sessions, and John Dunemann for the Guess Whose Coming to Dinners.
I would like to acknowledge the terrific work put in by Louise Clements in planning, organising and staging the inaugural Pride of Workmanship Awards Dinner. I am quite sure the event will become a premier night for the club.
My thanks go to David Baker for his secretarial duties and assistance during the year.
Treasurer Gerald Duhring has again handled the treasury with great expertise and dedication and John Dunemann has been his proxy on the many "Holiday's" Gerald has been on.
I congratulate Bernad Smith for his Paul Harris Fellow Award on behalf of all Club members and thank him the dedication and support he has shown to the Club.
I would like to thank all Rotarians partners for their support and encouragement during the year, I know that this is appreciated by all the Club members.
I thank all Rotarians for their support and encouragement as President for the year 2002 - 2003. I feel I have grown personally in many ways and am proud to have followed a long and very dedicated line of past Presidents.
This year we have an exchange student from Brazil, Thais. She has been with us since January and already has travelled much of the land. Penny and I enjoyed a delightful three months when she stayed with us. She has now moved on to Louise Clements, who I am sure will be delighted with Thais's charms as we have been. I am sure that Thais will enjoy the rest of her stay with us as she has so far.
It is with great regret that the Club acknowledges the passing of Jack Fullerton who was a Charter member of the Club 45 years ago. President 1962 - 1963 and a Paul Harris Fellow. He will be sorely missed by all members, and our thoughts are with his family.
In closing I thank Penny for sharing my Rotary Presidenal Year, the assistance, quiet reminders and encouragement she has given to me with love.
