HISTORY OF LINCOLN
ORIENTEERS
Orienteering
first began in Port Lincoln in 1976 when an event was organised at Spalding
Cove with the help of the Eyre Peninsula Further Education Centre. In
1977 events were held at Coomunga (May 8th Organiser - Kevin Vigar) at Koppio
(June 19th Organiser - Colin Beaton) and Marble Range (August 7th Organiser
- Warren Dickie).
Another event was set down for September of that year. In the July newsletter
of 1977 events at Whyalla, organised by Saltbush Orienteers, were also published.
At the end of 1977 the formation of the club took place with plans underway
to hold five events in 1978, plus two or three more if willing organisers could
be found. Kevin Vigar was the President with John Glasson the Secretary and
John Shorten as Treasurer. Fees for membership in 1978 were: Family Groups $6
plus 20 cents per head at each event. Individuals $4 plus 20 cents and Students
under 16 $2 plus 20 cents.
